Sikorsky History

In 1901, as a 12-year-old boy in the Czarist Russian City of Kiev, Igor Sikorsky built a small wooden model, powered by a rubber band, capable of vertical flight. The helicopter was born. Later, in September 14, 1939, Igor was behind the controls of the VS-300, the first ever helicopter flight.

Since its formation in 1923, Sikorsky the company has mirrored the qualities of Sikorsky the man - Imagination, energy, and a genius for engineering.

Today, Sikorsky continues to push the limits of technology. The huge, state-of-the-art aircraft plant in Stratford, Connecticut, has evolved with the times, seeing over 50 years of commercial production and a comparable number of production models. From intermediate executive transport to a heavy-lift military workhorse, from sonar-dipping to search-and-rescue to VIP transport, Sikorsky has the helicopters, the facilities, the resources, the support and the influence world-wide that customers have come to expect.
